Obituary for
Lois Elaine Hicks (Cooksey)
Lois Elaine (Cooksey) Hicks, caring mother and grandmother and thoughtful friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Porter, Texas on Saturday morning, December 21, 2019 at the age of 76 after a year-long courageous battle with lung cancer.
Lois will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Ruthie (Williams) Holguin and Regina K. Williams and her husband Brian Prample, of Houston, Texas. Lois will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Angelina Holguin, Paulie Holguin and Anderson Isdale, as well as by her brother James Archie Cooksey, Jr. of Elkhart, Texas and her sister Ava Bettis, of Florida and many other family members and friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her mother Elsie Lorene (Davis) Cooksey, her father James Archie Cooksey, Sr., her daughter Jerri Lynn Williams, and sisters Beaulah Cox and Frankie Harp.
The youngest of five children, Lois was born on October 18, 1943 at Jeff Davis hospital in Houston, Texas. Lois grew up in Houston, but met her first husband in Elkhart, Texas where both her father’s family and his mother’s family are from. Being a strong-minded woman, Lois took a job outside of the home—when it was unpopular to do so—after spending her first few married years as a housewife and stay-at-home mom. Her first job was as a secretary. Later on she worked for the Houston Independent School District for several years, and finally retired from the City of Houston as a Senior Police Service Officer. She made many friends wherever she worked, but was especially proud to serve alongside so many dedicated and honorable officers at Bush Intercontinental Airport with whom she made lifelong friendships. In addition to her friends, Lois met her late husband Pete Hicks at the airport where they both worked. She will be buried alongside of him at White Oak Cemetery. Lois was also a past Worthy Matron of Melrose Chapter, and a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in many capacities throughout her tenure. In recent years, Lois enjoyed gambling and spending time with her “breakfast club” friends. Lois’s greatest joy in life was having the whole family together for a big meal at the holidays.
We would like to thank all of her family members and friends who supported her over these last few years. Your care and compassion kept her going through difficult times. Thank you to Josie, Sylvia, Lora and Susan whose kindness, empathy, and care over these last few months comforted Lois and meant a lot to our family.
A funeral service will be held for Lois at Rosewood Funeral Home in Porter, Texas at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 28, 2019 with interment at White Oak Cemetery following. A private visitation for family members will be at Rosewood on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 4:00-5:00 pm. Open visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00-8:00 pm.
