Obituary for George Daniel Shepherd

George Daniel Shepherd, age 88, went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2019 after a courageous fight with cancer. George (Dan) was born October 22, 1930 to Jake and Eloise (Anderson) Shepherd in the community of Wattsville, Raines County, Texas. He was raised on a cotton farm in the middle of the great depression. At 17, after his father passed away, Dan went to live with his older sister in Deer Park, Texas. He began working as a groundskeeper at the San Jacinto Battleground, where he watched the Battleship Texas being brought into dock in 1948. In 1950, Dan got a job with Convair in Fort Worth, Texas and within 4 months he met and married the love of his life of 69 years, Faye Cannon. After 11 months he enlisted with the US Air Force and became one of only two people in his group to work on the Air Force’s first Jet Bomber. After his tour of service, Dan and his bride moved back to Deer Park to raise their three children. In 1990, Dan retired from Solvay Polymers and moved to Mexia, Texas beginning a second career driving “Big Rigs” and enjoying his love for the open road until he was 75 years old. In 2005, a move to Mont Belvieu, Texas allowed for a third career driving a tractor until the age of 86. Dan was hard-working his entire life. In his younger years, Dan enjoyed fishing, golfing and being on the road traveling. He had a great love for his family and was a true friend that was respected and loved by many.
