Billy L. Powell Sr.
Billy L. Powell, Sr. was the eighth child of nine, born December 3, 1938 to Willie Powell and Mary Floice Pittman. Billy grew up on a modest farm in Kokomo, Mississippi where hard work and love were valued and very few worldly possessions were to be found. But according to Billy, there was always food on the table, Church was attended and they always knew they were loved.
Billy Powell’s work life was long and varied. He started working at a very young age on the family farm milking cows, raising pigs and chickens and at school, playing Basketball. After graduating high school in May 1957 he went to work for Esso on offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. He later worked for Standard Supply Company out of Leeville La from 1961-1963. He then worked for Reed Roller Bit company from 1963- 1966 in Houma, LA. He started an oil tool company in 1967 in Laurel Ms. He later moved the family to Whittier, CA to go to work for Global Marine. He worked for Global from 1968 - 1972 moving from California to Louisiana to Dakar Senegal West Africa, San Carlos Spain and Port Gentile Gabon West Equatorial Africa. In 1972 he moved the family to Houston TX and one year later moved to Kingwood TX where he lived the rest of his life. In 1974 he cofounded an oilfield supply company, Oil Services and Trading which did a worldwide business in oilfield equipment and logistics. During his time with OSAT, he traveled around the world from the Far to the Middle East, Africa to Europe and South America to the Arctic. His was an exciting and full life. He retired from the Oil Industry in 2008.
Billy Powell is a Past President of the Nomads International Oilfield Association and was a committeeman for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for over 25 years. He sponsored the calves of many young people over the years and manned the International booth at the livestock show which entertains cattleman and farmers from all over the world.
He is survived by his wife Carmen, his children Billy Powell,Jr. (Kelly), Melissa Bagley(Chris), Sarah Burton (Cory) and his grandchildren Billy (III), Blake, and Taylor Powell, Ryan and Rebecca Bagley and Kyle, Kendall and Camille Burton.
The family would like to thank the staff at Silverado Kingwood for the love and care they gave Billy.
