Obituary for
Susan Beatrice White (Wells)
Mrs. Susan B. (Wells) White finally reached the peaceful arms of our God in the early morning hours of April 21, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with several medical issues.
Susan was born on July 23, 1946 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Jack and Dean Wells. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School and enrolled in the University of Southern Mississippi, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Language Disorders and a Master of Science degree in Speech Therapy. Exactly a week after her graduation, she married Ronald C. White, also of Hattiesburg, and they moved to Baytown, Texas to begin their respective careers.
Susan loved her work teaching deaf children in the local school systems as Exxon Chemical took Ron to Houston, Akron, Ohio, and then back to Houston. In 1984, she said goodbye to teaching and began a long-time dream of opening her own women’s apparel store in Kingwood, Texas. Then in 1991, Susan traded women’s apparel for furniture and eventually became sales manager for Star Furniture in Houston. She loved the constant contact with people and continued with Star until her knees would no longer allow her to traverse the huge showrooms.
Unwilling to give up working altogether, Susan then became an office manager for Scott Chiropractic Clinic and later Dannenfelser Chiropractic Clinic. Working with good people and dealing with good people who needed help brought great joy to her before her medical issues took over her body.
A broken leg on December 17, 2014, discovery of three cancerous brain tumors on May 8, 2015 and resulting surgery on May 12, followed by a partially debilitating stroke on May 25, 2015 took their toll on Susan’s body. In addition, lung cancer was discovered later that year. A total of fifty-nine radiation treatments, a hand-full of chemo treatments, and countless hours of physical therapy were more than anyone should endure. But Susan was not anyone.
Perseverance and courage were her nicknames but she could fight only so long. So we remember that infectious smile, eternal optimism, unselfish attitude, and incessant drive to make the world and its people better for our grandkids. She was passionate about working with young women in the Miss America Pageant system and with children in her church, Atascocita Methodist. Active in leading the children’s acolyte program, serving as wedding coordinator, and participating in the church’s Worship Committee, Susan truly touched and brightened many lives.
Susan is survived by her husband Ron White of Kingwood, TX; daughter Allison Warren and husband Fred of Houston, TX; daughter Staci Winn and husband Nathan of Montgomery, TX; sister Jacque Vanderwind of Wills Point, TX; and grandchildren Brittany and Amanda Warren and Sebastian Winn. She is preceded in death by her parents Jack and Dean Wells.
