Obituary for Ida G. Cano (Cano)

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ida G. Cano, 53, who left us unexpectedly on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Houston, Texas.

Ida was a devoted and thoughtful partner, a loyal daughter, a beautiful and generous sister and aunt, and a loving friend.

She was born October 6, 1960, in Corpus Christi, Texas and was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Mary Carroll high school and spent years working in retail before deciding to enter college as a “30-something freshman”. Her dreams to obtain a degree in psychology included another first, moving away from home. Ida chose Houston to embark upon her next adventure.

It was there on the campus of the University of Houston that Ida not only obtained her bachelors degree, but also - met the love of her life, her life partner Ermelinda, and they built a life together for the past 17-years.

Ida was also a dedicated employee at the Houston Press where she worked in sales for more than a decade. Although not a writer, she was one of the best storytellers and natural comedians you ever met. She had the ability to put everyone else at ease with her charismatic charm, heartwarming laugh and contagious smile. As much as she loved telling stories about her family and friends, she was also a great listener and with a loving transition and no judgment she was to tell you what you needed to hear.

She loved her dogs, shopping and haggling for new cars, fishing until she finally “caught one”, travelling to far away places embracing new adventures and capturing those moments with photography, gardening and grooming her lawn but especially beginning her day with Ermelinda sitting outside on the back porch with a cup of coffee, listening to the birds and watching the sun fill the sky to begin a new day.

Ida is preceded in death by her father Jesus M. Cano and she and Ermelinda spent the last four years caring for Ida’s ailing mother, in selfless and loving devotion.

Ida’s eternal spirit is strong and her faith in God unwavering. Her prayers gave her comfort and strength.

She is survived by her life partner, Ermelinda DeLaVina; mother, Idolina G. Cano, mother-in-law, Anna H. Reyes (Juan Antonio); sister, Linda Rodriguez (Glenn); sister, Diana Hinojosa (Ernesto); brother, Tony Cano (Belinda); brother, Carlos Cano; sister-in-law Norma DeLaVina; brother-in-law, Juan Reyes; nieces and nephews, Sandra Cano Cauley (Larry), Tony Cano (Jeordi), Ernesto Hinojosa III (Rene), Albert Hinojosa (Christine), Nicholas Hinojosa (Rheanna), J.J. Rodriguez (Eden), Jacob Rodriguez (Jennifer), Jesse Rodriguez (Amanda) and Lynda Rodriguez (Aaron); grand-nieces and nephews, Deegan Cano, Kova Cano, Liam Cauley, Owen Cauley, Macon Davis, Aiden Hinojosa, Alyssa Hinojosa, Jacob Rodriguez Jr., Caiden Rodriguez, Jordan Rodriguez, Gabriella Rodriguez, Lyana Rodriguez, Corynna Jean Rodriguez, Arabella Rodriguez, Katarina Rodriguez.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm with a rosary starting at 6pm, Thursday, May 1, at Rosewood Funeral Home 2602 S. Houston Ave. Humble, TX 77396, (281) 441-2171.

Funeral service will be held at 9:00am, Friday, May 2 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1701 San Jacinto St., Houston, TX 77002. Interment will follow at Rosewood Park Cemetery, 2602 Houston Ave., Humble, Texas 77396.

The family requests that Ida’s memory be honored with contributions to The Human Rights Campaign: , the Pup Squad of Houston: , Friends for Life:
